5 myths about laser hair removal

Look, I get it: The idea of a laser near your body’s most delicate regions sounds like a storyline pulled from the latest James Bond script. But I’m knee-deep (actually armpit-deep) into a laser hair removal regimen, and realizing… this really isn’t a big deal.

Laser hair removal has made a lot of advancements over the years. The most common areas treated are - in this order - upper/lower lip, underarms, and that dreaded bikini line. But while laser hair removal technology has evolved, the myths that came along with it have not. Which is why we’ve teamed up with our friends at ClarityMD - a wonderful medispa partner based in Carmel, Indiana - to bring you this info.

Here are a few common myths about laser hair removal that simply need to go:

1. It’s painful.

I was nervous walking in to ClarityMD. But as soon as I settled in to the treatment room and got started, I kept waiting for the painful part that simply never came. Laser hair removal used to include electrolysis - the act of destroying hair follicles by literally zapping them with electricity. Ouch. Newer methods such as the Alexandrite laser ClarityMD uses involve a less-invasive beam of light that not only lightens hair pigmentation, but also heats the follicle to inhibit future hair growth. And yes, it’s really painfree.

2. It takes forever to complete.

Now there are a few factors at play here: Your hair’s thickness, the area being treated, and your hair’s growth cycle. Most areas of the body require 6 monthly treatments to complete; for me, I’ve already seen noticeable results in 3 months. I call that quick.

3. It’s expensive.

As I’ve gotten older, my eyes have opened to medispa services out there like laser hair removal. Where I used to believe these were simply reserved for women with (armpit?) deep pockets, I’ve quickly discovered that preventative skincare is actually affordable. Laser hair removal packages can start at $500 depending on the length of treatment recommended, and many medispas offer payment plans, discounts for first-time customers, birthday perks, or frequent customer programs to help offset cost. Simply ask!

4. It’s permanent.

Yup, I’d heard this one too and was surprised to learn the opposite. After you’ve completed your 6-visit regime, customers are encouraged to schedule a maintenance appointment every 6 months or so to capture wayward hair follicles and extend the results. Think of it as an oil change for your laser hair investment.

5. It involves a lot of downtime.

Here’s the kicker: There’s virtually none at all! My ClarityMD specialist shared that areas treated could be slightly photosensitive for up to 2 weeks (which means to be cautious in sunlight and wear sunscreen!), but most people experience no issues at all.
