The long anticipation is over: The Children's Museum of Indianapolis debuted the new exhibit in their Take Me There: ® series this past weekend, thrusting Chinese culture into a thrillingly interactive spotlight for visitors.

Take Me There: China replaces the long-standing Take Me There: Egypt exhibit on the 2nd level at the Children's Museum, and we had a chance to sneak preview this new area prior to the public opening.

Upon entering, we discovered the previous Egyptian Airlines model has now been updated for the new destination {China}, boarding passengers with 'last names beginning with A-Z'. My 3yo promptly dove for a front-row seat in the plane and we "flew" over the Great Wall before deplaning in the exhibit. Ni hao exclaimed the welcoming committee on an interactive billboard - a great chance to explain to my Emerson how other cultures and countries use different words to say hello.
Throughout the course of our sneak preview evening, we: Picture
  • Tried our hand at one of the many Chinese calligraphy stations
  • Ventured into the model homes that showed 'traditional' Chinese houses and more modernized living
  • Visited the Panda Research Center where we held baby pandas {note: these are wonderfully stuffed animals! the Museum has not gone into the business of zoo keeping} and learned how to feed/care for them
  • Played a number of different Chinese instruments like bian zhong bells and guzheng
  • Oogled the beautifully-dressed Opera stars, and
  • Created a make-believe Chinese meal in the remodeled restaurant
Overall this exhibit quickly became a must-see for our frequent-Children's-Museum-visitation-stops, and we definitely encourage you to make a beeline during your next visit.
